halloween

we picked out ava's halloween costume in early september. i think my very favorite part of halloween actually occurred on a random walk home from school somewhere in mid-september:

ava: mommy, my arm keeps getting tired.
cailin: why?
ava: from holding it up in the air.
cailin: why are you holding it up in the air?
ava: (demonstrating) because i'm practicing to be the status of liberty!

trick or treat

halloween night drew a lot of firsts for ava.... first time she went trick-or-treating after dark, first time she went with some friends, and first time she managed the whole thing all on her own!

corey, arantxa and i took the girls trick-or-treating at nightfall. they tromped up stairs by themselves, found doorbells, piled on top of the poor people trying to give them candy, and between the three of them usually managed to say "trick-or-treat", "thank-you" and "happy halloween!".

trick-or-treating had an unusual feeling in san francisco this year, as the s.f. giants were in the process of winning the world series. arantxa and i left john at home to attend to our trick-or-treaters, and monitor the game online. however, the temptation proved to much, and the second we turned the corner, john abandoned his post and took off for a neighbourhood bar to watch the game. which would have been just fine if he hadn't left....

  • the porch lights on
  • the jack-o-lanterns lit
  • the candy on a table just inside our GLASS door, nicely encircled with candles
  • the door locked

talk about cruel! oh.....daddy.

the water fairy

ava's halloween costume this year was my dream come true. when this year's ever so dangerous wishcraft catalog arrived, the cover photo was of some sort of neptune princess outfit. i fell in love. then cunningly sold it to ava as an "ocean fairy" costume, and she fell similarly in love.

next year i'm sure she'll exact revenge by insisting on being sponge bob, or some equally irritating cartoon character. no matter... i got my perfect halloween!

all hallows eve

halloween this year was a busy affair. we kicked off the day with a costume adorned ballet class. ava's ballet class is a pretty drop-dead cute affair on a normal day, but with every single little girl in their fairy and/or princess outfit, it was kind of out of control. (unfortunately, no pics, as the studio has strict rules about how often you're allowed to observe distrupt class, and i'm saving my pass for next week).

after that we were off to a fun party at her buddy ian's house, where we had ou (annual?) fairy-princess portraits taken.

then we did a brief trick-or-treat around our neighbourhood. ava's part of that was definitely meeting her fairy princess twin. then we dashed home so that we could receive our own batch of trick-or-treaters.

our decorations went over well - we heard a few "best house we've seen today", but the kids were especially pleased with our glow-necklace and glow-stick treats. i think this was ava's favorite part of the day. she got very excited about doling out the glowing treasures. so excited, that she didn't even seem to notice that we gave them all away, not even leaving one for her!

halloween breakfast

ava's preschool did a little trick-or-treating on friday, october 30th, so ava started out halloween day with an already tempting bag-o-treats. of course, she insisted on dipping in first thing in the morning. therefore - M&M's for breakfast.

later, i realized that i really should have served them with milk and a spoon!

halloween prep

grandma came to visit for a pre-halloween visit, and we all had good fun getting our house all ready for halloween. first, ava put on a lovely pair of polka-dot PANTS. getting her into pants, of course required a pre-halloween treat, which she graciously shared with her pumpkin. then ava turned three innocent pumpkins into a witch, a dog and a bat.

once those were complete, we started on the big guy. ava and grandma scooped out the guts, ava and daddy colored in the template, and then daddy carved it into a beautiful glowing cat.

halloween delivery

we took ava on her first local neighborhood trick or treat this year. by far the best part of the expedition for everyone was the UPS delivery man. we ran into him a few blocks from our house, and he fished out some lollipops from his pocket for ava. up until this point, ava had only received crummy old chocolate (which she hates), so she was pretty enthused about the lollipops. they were the great, old-fashioned kind - in the see-through wrappers, so she could tell instantly what she was getting. after completing the lollipop transaction, he brought out a package tucked under his other arm and handed it to me. that's right . . . the UPS guy recognized me . . . at twilight . . . in a fairy costume . . . two blocks from my house . . . because that's house many packages the poor guy has delivered to our house! lots more fairy pics here.

pumpkin patch

we saved our annual trip to the pumpkin patch for grandma's visit as well. ava wasn't quite as enamored with the actual pumpkins this year, but she definitely got a kick out of all the other related activities, like the pony ride, the petting zoo and the train. however, the winner as far as ava was concerned was definitely the pumpkin ice-cream.

halloween warmup

grandma arrived for a halloween visit - just in time for the annual randall museum halloween party. the highlight was lots of arts and crafts with grandma. ava also liked getting her face painted - thus becoming a fairy princess kitty. we rounded the afternoon off with a magic show.

i'm scared

about a month ago, ava was watching an episode of little bear in her room, while i was making dinner in the kitchen. ava came running out mid-episode yelling "i'm scared! i'm scared!". when we went back in to her room together, she was hiding behind my legs and peeking out fearfully at the television. and so a new phase begins . . . since then, we've had to take several little bear episodes out of circulation. the original "scary" episode featured a dream sequence in which little bear and friends were about to be eaten by a whale. we've also removed nearly all the halloween themed episodes, including completely goofy moments in which owl has a sheet over his head and is pretending to e a ghost. like all parents - we're totally baffled at how she knows that these things are even supposed to be scary. sure - being eaten by a whale doesn't sound great, but how does ava know that? and if she (presumably) has no idea what a ghost is - why is friendly owl dressed like a ghost an object of terror?

one thing is for sure - we're going to have to tread a bit lightly this halloween. we kicked off halloween today with a trip to the bay area discovery museum halloween party. they had a bunch of goofy, definitely-not-scary carnival-type-games, but let me tell you . . . it took every ounce of ava's courage, and much cajoling on mommy's part to get the little fairy to go retrieve her prize from the scary monster hand. i then cruelly dragged her into the haunted house where she lasted all of five seconds before she had a complete meltdown. i was totally impressed that she happily stayed in her fairy costume the whole time, and gosh . . . can you believe how long her hair is getting?
