looking for the perfect way to spend a 90F day with your pre-schooler in the middle of a city of 8 million people?

first, hop on your friendly neighborhood air-conditioned subway and head to washington square park in greenwich village. admire the lovely flowers and local wildlife along the way, but head straight for the fountain wading pool in the middle.

when the promise of a popsicle finally lures your child out of the fountain, take a moment to enjoy either the grand piano concert under the arches, or the jazz band on the west side of the park. then head for the perfectly shaded playground.

hungry? head south on thompson street (a.k.a. "chess store alley?"), and spend a moment being deeply puzzled by the little lebowski shop. jog one block west at houston, crossing into soho on sullivan st., and stop at peppe rosso, a true hole-in-the-wall neighborhood italian restaurant with three tables and awesome spaghetti.

finally, stop by a street fair put on by the children's museum of the arts and then hop back on your subway.
