amazed

there's a difference between being proud of your kid, and completely amazed. kids give you plenty of opportunities to feel proud. they learn to walk, talk, read "sam sat on the cat", ride their bike, etc. each of these are notable accomplishments, and you will be proud (and you should be!). but, big picture, you're not exactly surprised. clearly, it would be a great deal more surprising if they did not cross these milestones.

and then, every once in awhile, they do something that truly, well, amazes you.

today was one of those days.

after maybe 8 sessions on her bike, 7 riding around a flat astro-turf field, and 1 riding around a flat paved school-yard, ava rode her bike... 1/2 mile up the sidewalk to the park, 3 miles around the park loop road including one quite sizeable uphill and 1/2 mile back down the sidewalk home.

umm... what just happened?

see below for random 20 second snippet of her journey.

night biking

daddy's home late, but promised ava a biking date. eh, no problem! let's see here... we'll just strip the fancy lights off daddy's commuter bike, and strap 'em on to ava's little pink thing. okay kiddo, let's go!

Editor's note: No small children were endangered during the filming of this episode. ava is biking on the completely smooth astroturf field depicted in our last episode. Since it doubles as a baseball diamond, the field is separated from all roads by 15 foot high fences. Even with no lights, there's really not too much that could go wrong.

halloween

we picked out ava's halloween costume in early september. i think my very favorite part of halloween actually occurred on a random walk home from school somewhere in mid-september:

ava: mommy, my arm keeps getting tired.
cailin: why?
ava: from holding it up in the air.
cailin: why are you holding it up in the air?
ava: (demonstrating) because i'm practicing to be the status of liberty!

on her own two wheels

we (mostly john) have been trying to teach ava to ride a bike for right around two years. it was a long project, with many phases, several many-month hiatuses due to general frustration, and some weird sidetrips. but, we made it! and really, 5 1/4 years is actually pretty darn young to be riding a bike so well.

john figures that if we'd known then what we know now, we could have accomplished this in half the time. so, while it's fresh in our minds, here are the dos and don'ts of teaching a preschooler to ride a bike.

  1. DO start with a trike, preferably indoors on an easy surface. Just learning to pedal is a good first step.
  2. From there, graduate to sidewalk triking. Trikes with a brake are best, and learning to coast downhill while maneuvering around pedestrians is a good skill.
  3. DO NOT buy a bike with training wheels. Or, if you do, just realize it's a complete and utter waste of time.
  4. DO buy a balance bike, or just buy a normal bike and take off the pedals and lower the seat. Find an area with very gentle hills, and practice coasting down the hill. The idea is to get the child to lift their feet off the ground for longer and longer intervals while coasting along. Do NOT get sucked into any other weird gadgets.
  5. Put the pedals back on, choose a flat, soft surface, give the get the traditional back of the seat push... and they're off!

.. and, without further ado, here are the results of all that learning (on both the parental and the child end of things!)

a visit to ottawa

now that we're on the east coast "everything" (except california) seems a whole lot closer. ava and i celebrated our shrunken world view with a trip to ottawa to visit joan/arno/lucy/arthur and edith/craig/graham.

we only stayed for a weekend, but we managed to pack in a lot of fun! we started off with lucy's fourth birthday party - a cooking class very professionally scaled down to size, with a menu of pizza, fruit salad and cupcakes. clearly, canadians raise their kids with higher standards, as i've never seen a better behaved crew. nobody even spilled more then a little flour on the floor, for goodness sakes!

after the party we set out to a local pumpkin patch. thankfully, several members of our party had visited the same farm a few weeks before, so this time we only got mildly lost in the corn maze. after that we squished our way through the mud to the pumpkin patch, where ava and lucy dug for worms, and the rest of us enjoyed the sunshine. ava and lucy selected some crazy gourds to take home, which ava transformed into swans the next day.

sunday was lucy's real birthday, so we started with presents. lucy got a short taste of what it would be like to be the younger sibling while ava "helped" lucy open her presents. the clear hit of the day was lucy's new playmobil pool set (from mommy and daddy). lucy did an amazing job of sharing her newest prize posession, and she and ava splashed around for a good couple of hours.

after we drug them off the pool deck, we headed out to a nearby nature preserve, known for it's extraordinarily tame birds. lucy was a bit spooked when the little bird claws wrapped around her fingers (i don't blame her, it's a weird feeling!), but ava was totally enthralled.

finally, we wrapped up our visit with a good stomp in the leaves in lucy's front yard.

editor's note: some of these pictures were taken by joan, and some by me, and i don't remember whose are whose. throughout the weekend, we took a combined total of nearly 900 pictures, and probably said "LOOK AT THE CAMERA" about 5,00 times. lots and lots more pictures here, i had a very hard time pruning this batch!

ava's art projects

ava has a funny relationship with art. if you ask her to draw a picture, there's about a 50/50 chance that she'll produce some random squiggles worthy of a 2 year old... or draw you quite a lovely, detailed age-appropriate picture. you just never know.

overall though, drawing a picture of something definitely isn't her favorite. ava likes to make a thing, not draw a picture of a thing. sort of found-art sculpture i guess. and, inevitably, her most impressive creations always appear after she sneaks off to room on her own, then appears a half an hour later with her latest creature.

we were quite fond of this water-bottle pig. he's filled with strips of pink foam paper, carefully stuffed inside. then wrapped with pink wrapping paper ribbon, and topped off with a curly pipe cleaner tail and googly eyes.
